BREAKING NEWS: Dinwiddie Deputy charged in fatal home shooting

An off-duty Dinwiddie County Deputy Sheriff is facing charges after police say he fatally shot his brother over the weekend.

Sgt. Stephan Vick of the Virginia State Police said the incident began at approximately 2:59 a.m. Sunday, when Terrell Coles, 24, and his brother Brandon D. Coles, 25, both of Dinwiddie County, were at Terrell Cole’s residence in the 15700 block of Allen Drive.

An altercation broke out between the two brothers, according to Vick, an altercation which escalated.

“At some point during the altercation a weapon was retrieved and Terrell Coles shot Brandon Coles, fatally wounding him,” Vick said.

Terrell Coles is charged with second-degree murder and is being held in the Dinwiddie County Jail without bond.

Maj. William Knott, Chief Deputy for the Dinwiddie County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed Coles was an off-duty deputy at the time of the incident.

Vick said the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Richmond Field Division is conducting the investigation at the request of the Dinwiddie County Sheriff.
