A police-involved shooting took place on June 17 at approximately 4:05p.m. in the 2000 block of Waterside Road in Prince George County. The Prince George Police Department attempted to execute the arrest of an adult male individual—later identified as Lorenzo Lee Tyler, Jr., a 20-year old male from Colonial Heights—with outstanding arrest warrants from the City of Petersburg. Mr. Tyler was also the subject of an on-going investigation involving guns, drugs and a prior high speed police pursuit in Prince George County.

During the attempted arrest, several Prince George police officers discharged bullets at the suspect; it was later determined that five shots were fired by the police officers. The suspect appeared to have sustained a single gunshot wound.

Officers administered first-aid to Mr. Tyler before he was quickly transported by Prince George EMS to the Southside Regional Medical Center with apparent non-life threatening injury. A handgun was also recovered from the suspect’s vehicle.

On June 18, Mr. Tyler was committed to the Riverside Regional Jail with no bond. Mr. Tyler was served with the following felony arrest warrants, stemming from the June 9 Prince George County Police investigation: possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance and eluding police.

He was also served with additional arrest warrants following the police-involved shooting incident on June 17 including: two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and eluding police.

At the request of Prince George County Police, members of the Virginia State Police are conducting an investigation related to the officers-involved shooting. The officers involved in the shooting have currently been placed on administrative leave, per Department policy. The involved officers did not sustain any injuries.
