DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va – What should have been a routine traffic stop turned into a brief police pursuit that ended after authorities said the driver crashed into the side of a Petersburg grocery store.

According to Dinwiddie Sheriff’s Office Major William Knott, deputies attempted to make a traffic stop near the intersection of Cedar Heart Lane and Ferndale Road in the county Monday.

Instead of complying, Knott said the driver fled, speeding off toward Boydton Plank Road and the city of Petersburg nearby.

Once in the city, Knott said the driver then lost control of his car, crashing into the side of Harrison’s Supermarket at the intersection of Elm and West Washington streets.

The suspect then attempted to flee authorities on foot but was captured a short time later. The identity of the suspect and charges they may be facing has not been revealed by law enforcement.

The store remains open for business. A portion of the side of the building has been roped off.
