DINWIDDIE – Eight people were injured after a van and sport utility vehicle collided along U.S. Route 460 early Wednesday afternoon.
According to Dinwiddie Fire Chief Dennis Hale, just before 2 p.m. first responders were dispatched to the 19000 block of Cox Road near Sutherland’s Slip In gas station for a report of a motor vehicle accident with persons trapped inside.
Once on scene, emergency crews began to render aid to seven of the van’s eight occupants and the driver of the SUV, the sole person inside. Due to the scope of the crash and the number of injuries, Hale said additional resources were called to the scene, including neighboring units from Chesterfield and three medical helicopters, with one of those helicopters being canceled as the incident progressed.
Six of the patients were taken via ambulance to Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg, while two others were airlifted to VCU Medical Center in Richmond. The severity of their injuries and their condition are unknown as of this report.
As for the crash itself, Hale said Virginia State Police continues to investigate the incident.
