The Generals stayed undefeated with a 28-19 Friday night victory over the Knights. Thomas Dale held a 7-0 lead after the first quarter. The Knights held Dinwiddie to their lowest offensive output of the season, as well as the smallest deficit in the loss.
Freshman Wide Receiver Christ Tyree ran a 15 yard touchdown after a 21 yard drive which lasted only two plays. The Knights closed out the quarter with a 7-0 lead. Thomas Dale was able to hold their lead all the way until the final two minutes of the first half.
The Generals tied the score after a blocked punt return was carried into the end zone by Junior Linebacker K’Vaughn Pope. The Generals were able to make into the half tied at 7-7. Dinwiddie led 188-95 in offensive yards at the half. The General defense held the Knights to just 21 total passing yards going into the break.
Thomas Dale in the second half put on the pressure to Dinwiddie by taking a 13-7 lead after a Senior Running Back Maxwell Oxendine carried a two yard touchdown run in a 27 yard drive that was over after four plays. On the extra kick however, the General defense was able to block the attempt to keep the deficit at six.
Dinwiddie responded to Thomas Dale’s lead with 14 unanswered points. Pope began the attack after running the Knights’ kickoff from their previous score 87 yards to retake the lead. At the end of the third quarter the Generals were on top 14-13.
In the fourth quarter Dinwiddie was able to put it away, outscoring Thomas Dale 14-6. Junior Running Back Zyan Sturdivant after a 40 yard drive which lasted only three plays, carried an eight yard run into the end zone for a General touchdown.
Trailing 21-13, the Knights managed to get into the Dinwiddie end of the field one more time when Senior Quarterback Matt Lawton completed an 18 yard pass to Senior Running Back Devonte Russell. The Knights attempted a two point conversion to tie the score, but the General Defense was able to hold them off, and was still ahead 21-19 after the drive.
In the final two minutes of the game, Dinwiddie gave themselves some insurance when Senior Wide Receiver Tye Freeland ran in a four yard touchdown after a 36 yard drive which was six plays long. Leading 28-19, the General defense held off Thomas Dale to earn a 6-0 record. The Knights with the loss fell to 4-2.
Dinwiddie led 285-208 in total offensive yards. Sturdivant was their lead rusher with 106 yards. Senior Quarterback Bryce Witt had 71 rushing yards for the Generals, as well as 130 total passing yards for Dinwiddie. Freeland was the leader in receiving yards for the Generals with 91 total.
Thomas Dale’s next match will be on the road against Petersburg this Friday. Dinwiddie will be hosting Prince George High School at home on Friday. The Royals will be coming in to Dinwiddie off of a 48-21 win over Colonial Heights last Friday.
