CENTRAL VIRGINIA – Job seekers looking for work have an opportunity to join one of the region’s newest grocery store chains as a series of job fairs plans to fill a number of opens at new stores in the area, including Colonial Heights.

Last week, Florida-based grocer Publix announced a pair of job fairs in Colonial Heights and Glen Allen ahead of planned store openings in the Richmond-Metro and Tri-Cities areas.

According to the company, a job fair event is scheduled for August 23 through 26 in Colonial Heights at the Hilton Garden Inn near Southpark Mall, located at 800 Southpark Boulevard in the city, to fill openings at Publix’s newest and still under construction location at Colonial Square near the corner of Lakeview Avenue and Boulevard.

While the job fair listing does not provide specific jobs that are being filled, interested applicants can go online to the company’s website at to begin their application before the nearly week-long job fair or schedule an appointment to apply at the event.

The job fair comes only weeks after Martin’s Food Stores quietly completed their exit of Virginia following a 2015 merger with Food Lion’s parent Delhaize Group and the 2016 sale of a number of Martin’s stores to the Florida grocer as part of a divesting of locations to allow the deal the move forward comfortably.

Many of Martin’s locations closed between the summer of 2016 to the present, including the Colonial Square store in February of this year. That store was among nearly a dozen bought by Publix during the July 2016 transaction.

Martin’s store in Petersburg closed in the summer of 2016 following the company’s decision to not renew the lease on the site. That space has since been filled by discount retailer Roses Express.

This month, Martin’s stores that were not purchased by Publix or any other grocer, including the store in Chester’s Bermuda Square shopping center, closed their doors permanently and saw the bright red lettering of Martin’s name unbolted from the facade of the store in less than a day.

With the newly announced job fair, speculation on an opening date for the new Publix store Colonial Heights has already begun swirling in the region, with reports of a November opening being shared among locals.

When asked about the validity of any dates being discussed in the community, Publix representative Kimberly Reynolds reiterated that they don’t have a confirmed date for opening.

“We don’t have a confirmed date, but it will open later this year,” she said in a statement. “We are excited and eager to begin serving Colonial Heights and its surrounding communities.”

While the date of the new store’s opening remains tentatively scheduled for later this year, it was revealed in 2016 at the time of the Publix-Martin’s transaction that hiring for the stores would take place “approximately 14 weeks prior to store openings.”

Publix has already opened three locations in the Central Virginia region, a location in White Oak Village in Richmond and two in Glen Allen at Nuckols Place and the Shoppes at Crossridge.
