A Dinwiddie Middle School eighth grader is being detained in custody after being caught with a gun in school.
Dinwiddie County Sheriff D.T. “Duck” Adams said in a press release that authorities were alerted to the possibility the male student had a handgun on the morning of June 2.
“Student tips alerted school administrators of the potential that a student had brought a weapon to school,” Adams wrote. “The student was quickly removed from the presence of other students and the handgun was located and seized by the School Resource Officer.”
Adams added no motive for the student bringing the weapon has been uncovered but the matter is being investigated. The Sheriff further added due to the swift work of the school leadership in finding the weapon, the school was never placed in Lockdown status.
The suspect, 14, was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm on school property, possession of a concealed weapon, and underage possession of a firearm.
The suspect was detained at the Crater Juvenile Detention Center in Disputanta pending a detention hearing in Dinwiddie Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.
