DINWIDDIE – The Virginia Office of the Secretary Veterans and Defense Affairs, in cooperation with the Counties of Nottoway, Dinwiddie, and Brunswick, the Town of Blackstone, Fort Pickett Maneuver Training Center (MTC), and agencies and organizations in the region, is preparing a Joint Land Use Study (JLUS) to address compatibility planning with Fort Pickett MTC.

The JLUS will address impacts of community development on Fort Pickett MTC, as well as impacts of Fort Pickett MTC operations on the surrounding communities. The JLUS will make recommendations that promote compatible land use and collaboration between Fort Pickett MTC and jurisdictions in the JLUS Study Area.

The goal of the JLUS is to mitigate current compatibility issues and prevent future potential compatibility issues, while accommodating new growth and economic development, protecting public health and safety, and sustaining the operational missions of Fort Pickett MTC.

Virginia National Guard Soldiers assigned to the Bedford-based Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team conduct civil disturbance training at the Combined Arms Collective Training Facility at Fort Pickett, Virginia. (U.S. National Guard)

The JLUS will assess 25 compatibility factors to identify existing or potential issues and propose strategies to address these issues. Issues for the compatibility factors include, but are not limited to: Coordination / Communication, Housing Availability, Land Use, Noise, Resiliency, Safety, Vertical Obstructions, Vibration.

In order to develop a plan that is responsive to local needs, input from the community is essential! The public is encouraged to join us at this workshop to learn more about this planning study and provide input on the issues to be addressed.
