Long-awaited site to open for residents this Fall, county says
WILSONS – The Dinwiddie County Department of Public Works has begun work on what will be the County’s ninth and final manned convenience site.
“The final site is located in the Wilsons area, and will complete the transition from dump sites to manned convenience sites across the entire county,” said Gene Jones, Director, Public Works, Dinwiddie County.
“Concrete has been poured, and equipment procurement is underway. We expect the Wilsons manned site to be online in the early fall,” Anne Howerton, Deputy County Administrator, explained in an interview last week.
Manned sites have shown to significantly reduce the amount of litter found in-and-around dump sites. With a county employee present at all times during hours of operation, trash and debris never touch the ground. Household trash and refuse are taken from the vehicle and placed directly into a compacting container. Any material that blows out of vehicles or containers is immediately picked up by the site attendant.
In addition to reducing litter throughout the County, convenience sites are designed to eliminate illegal dumping by individuals who are not citizens of Dinwiddie County. Users of the manned convenience sites are required to show proof of residency in Dinwiddie County. This can be in the form of a driver’s license, vehicle registration, or even a county tax bill.
“I was on the Board when the first manned site opened, and I have seen the positive impact that occurs in communities as each additional site has been added,” said Mr. Harrison Moody, District 1 Supervisor. “I am especially proud of the Wilsons site, not just because it sits in my district; but it completes our transition to a manned convenience site system countywide.”
The Wilsons manned site will be located at 2025 Springston Road, Wilsons, Virginia 23894. The scheduled hours of operation for the Wilsons site will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays; and 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays.
“Just like all of our other manned convenience sites, the Wilsons site will collect both recyclable and non-recyclable trash, so it could not be more convenient for our residents of Wilsons,” said Jones. “We are hopeful that this will encourage more residents to begin to recycle. We have found that those residents that were reluctant to recycle, but finally begin, are always surprised at how easy and convenient it truly is.”
